Empowerment Through Dance Continues at CATA

Pilobolus with CATA artists.

Before embarking on their Fall 2026 tour, Pilobolus's company dancers made a special trip to Great Barrington, MA, to help lead the weekly inclusive movement class with Education Director Emily Kent at CATA. Community Access to the Arts (CATA) is a nonprofit that nurtures and celebrates the creativity of people with disabilities through the arts. Since September 2025, Pilobolus has been working with CATA’s Moving Company, a mixed-ability dance ensemble and one of CATA’s many arts programs for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Through weekly sessions led by Pilobolus Teaching Artists, CATA artists explore how movement can spark creativity, build connections, and open up new possibilities for expression. Each session offers opportunities to experiment, collaborate, and discover what’s possible when people create together.

Recently, Pilobolus Dance Captain Isaac Huerta, along with dancers Ryan Hayes, Kalyan Sayre, Anouk Otsea, and Alexis Cruz-Castro, joined Education Director Emily Kent and  Teaching Artist Will Clayton for a special class with the Moving Company. Working in pairs and small groups, dancers and CATA artists explored trust, collaboration, and the art of making shapes with the body. Simple movements evolved into increasingly intricate arrangements, with ideas building on one another as more participants joined in. Pilobolus’s signature weight-sharing techniques and playful approach to dance-making were on full display, culminating in a series of choreographed mini-performances created through shared exploration.

At Pilobolus, we believe everyone can learn, grow, and find joy through movement. Our work with CATA puts that belief into practice, creating space for artists of all abilities to experiment, take creative risks, and experience the excitement of making something together. We look forward to exploring what we can create together through the transformative power of movement.
