MOVIN’ is one of Pilobolus’s longest running youth development programs, providing an opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school students to learn about communication, collaboration, and self-awareness through movement.

WHAT is MOVIN’?

MOVIN' is an in-school dance workshop residency that uses collaborative, improvisational movement to educate and empower.

During the multi-session program led by Pilobolus teaching artists, students of all abilities will create and share stories through dance making, culminating in a celebratory performance for the school community and families.

HOW does MOVIN’ work?

A Pilobolus teaching artist (or artists) will work with students at your school over a series of sessions to:
  • Create a safe space to encourage self-expression and respect

  • Lead students through a progressive series of exercises that encourage listening and responding to others

  • Encourage leadership and collaboration through movement

  • Guide students to work together as a group to solve problems and create performances together

why does everyone love it?

MOVIN' addresses physical development, encourages teamwork, and improves communication and socio-emotional learning. And its benefits are felt and observed by all.

Participants report:

  • restored confidence

  • improved academic skills across disciplines

  • new or renewed friendships with peers
Administrators, teachers, and parents report:
  • significant, positive behavioral transformation

  • increased focus

  • boosted self-esteem

  • enhanced psychological and physical self-awareness

  • greater respect for others

“It was so incredible because I learned so much about myself... This experience gave me the confidence to do things I thought I couldn’t. I realized that when I put everything I had into it, I could do it!
— Alex Ball, Fifth Grade, Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School

Educators

Pilobolus is always looking to bring the magic of MOVIN’ to new educational institutions.

We typically, but not exclusively, work with Title 1 schools and afterschool programs for students in grades three to eight. Residencies include six to eight sessions of one-hour workshops held during or after the school day. We have successfully implemented this program across schools in Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, and Florida, reaching over 6,000+ students!

If you are interested in bringing MOVIN’ to your school, please reach out to our Education Director, Emily Kent.

My students were eager to go to dance class each day. I noticed that the dance class helped my students with teamwork...I also noticed that students’ creativity skyrocketed after being in the dance class. Students were coming up with all different ways to complete the challenges instead of trying to copy others.
